First Meeting in 1948
April 23-25

Friday, April 23

St. Louis 3, Chicago 0
Chicago was routed by Harry Brecheen, who never let a man reach second for the whole game. Of the three men he did let on base, all through singles, two were still caught up in double plays from the following batter. Brecheen himself helped his cause by scoring after drawing a walk in the seventh and then knocking in another run with a double the following inning.

Chicago 6, St. Louis 5
An error by Stan Musial in the second led to a four-run inning, which would ultimately prove to be the difference after a late rally by St. Louis. Stan Musial tried to make up for it with a solo home run and a walk he later scoring on in that rally in the eighth, but in the end it was not enough.

St. Louis 2, Chicago 0
Murry Dickson tossed a two-hit shutout for his first win of the season. The Cardinals scored a run off an error in the first, and the game nearly finished in a 1-0 score until Marty Marion hit an RBI single to drive in Enos Slaughter, who reached base on another error that inning. Russ Meyer only allowed six hits in eight innings of work, but got the loss despite allowing no earned runs.
