Down three in the eighth, Sam Vico and Johnny Lipon both hit two-run homers to cap off another Detroit come-from-nehind win. The game had many similarities with Monday's contest, where Detroit's starter also hung around for the win while a Browns reliver got the loss.

Cleveland 4, Chicago 1
Lou Boudreau missed out on his second grand slam of the season, but a bases-clearing double to break the tie in the ninth was more than enough with Bob Lemon shutting the White Sox down on the mound. Lemon, who also benefitted from Boudreau's grand slam last week to avoid the loss, earned the win by allowing just five hits in his complete game. He also was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored twice in the contest.

Chicago 3, Cleveland 2
There were only two occasions where a Chicago batter game to the plate with a runner in scoring position, yet both times the batter drove in the run. For comparison, Cleveland failed get a hit in any of their chances, only scoring with Larry Doby's first career home run with the bases empty and a wild pitch allowing Jim Hegan to score from third in the seventh.

Ralph Kiner and Clyde Kluttz had a pair of three-hit days, but it was not enough as the Reds flipped the script in the final two innings with five runs. After scoring two to pull within one going into the ninth, Ray Lamanno doubled to start the ninth before Virgil Stallcup drove him in with a single. Ted Kluszewski, pinch hitting for the pitcher, then belted the first home run of his career to walk off the Pirates.

Pittsburgh 4, Cincinnati 2 [GAME 2 OF 2]
Pittsburgh never once had a hit with a runner in scoring position, but it didn't matter as their four solo home runs propelled Hal Gregg and the bullpen to a victory. All four homers were leadoff homers, a rare feat. Cincinnati had more opportunities to score but could never capitalize on them.

St. Louis Cardinals (2-1) at Chicago Cubs (3-0)
First Meeting in 1948
April 23-25

Friday, April 23

St. Louis 3, Chicago 0
Chicago was routed by Harry Brecheen, who never let a man reach second for the whole game. Of the three men he did let on base, all through singles, two were still caught up in double plays from the following batter. Brecheen himself helped his cause by scoring after drawing a walk in the seventh and then knocking in another run with a double the following inning.

Chicago 6, St. Louis 5
An error by Stan Musial in the second led to a four-run inning, which would ultimately prove to be the difference after a late rally by St. Louis. Stan Musial tried to make up for it with a solo home run and a walk he later scoring on in that rally in the eighth, but in the end it was not enough.

Murry Dickson tossed a two-hit shutout for his first win of the season. The Cardinals scored a run off an error in the first, and the game nearly finished in a 1-0 score until Marty Marion hit an RBI single to drive in Enos Slaughter, who reached base on another error that inning. Russ Meyer only allowed six hits in eight innings of work, but got the loss despite allowing no earned runs.

Sunday, April 25

Brooklyn 3, Philadelphia 2
Despite his offense getting more than double the number of hits than he allowed, Dutch Leonard's bad luck continued with his second loss of the season. An HBP and then a two-base error led to an intentional walk to load the bases in the first before he gave up his first hit of the game, a two-RBI single by Dick Whitman. A sacrifice fly by Arky Vaughan in the fourth would be the last run he surrendered, but the Phillies offense could only put together two total runs of their own. After Del Ennis homered with one out in the eighth, Harry Walker tripled, putting the tying run ninety feet from home. However, the next two batters could not hit him in, and a double play killed all of the team's momentum in the ninth.

New York 9, Boston 4 [GAME 2 OF 2]
New York took the series with a complete game victory by Clint Hartung. New
York's five runs in the fifth were the key to breaking the game open. With runners on second and third and no outs, Johnny Mize was intentionally walked. Understandable, but the Braves paid dearly after Sid Gordon doubled to drive two in, with the three of the next four batters singling to drive in a run. Jack Conway finished off the scoring on a groundout, one inning after hitting a two-RBI single.
