Rex Barney departed the game with the lead but the bullpen let him down in the ninth. Hugh Casey allowed a leadoff tripe to Willard Marshall, allowing the winning run to step up to the plate. The inning started with a costly error by Willard Marshall, as Arky Vaughan would reach base and scored an unearned run thanks to a Preston Ward single. The remaining runs would then be unearned as the next two batters were retired. Brooklyn's two-out rally involved a pair of walks and singles, then a bases-clearing triple by Jackie Robinson, who was driven in with a home run by Vaughan.BOXSCORE: 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers At 1948 New York Giants 4/21/1948 Dodgers AB R H RBI AVG Giants AB R H RBI AVG J.Robinson 2B 5 1 1 3 .200 J.Conway 2B 4 1 2 0 .250 A.Vaughan LF 4 3 1 2 .250 W.Lockman LF 4 1 2 1 .375 P.Ward 1B 5 0 2 1 .400 B.Thomson CF 4 0 1 1 .333 C.Furillo CF 5 0 0 1 .222 J.Mize 1B 4 1 1 1 .125 P.Reese SS 5 1 0 0 .222 W.Marshall RF 3 0 1 0 .286 D.Whitman RF 3 1 2 0 .571 W.Cooper C 4 0 1 0 .250 B.Cox 3B 3 1 0 0 .000 J.Lohrke 3B 3 0 0 0 .000 G.Hodges C 3 1 0 1 .143 R.Rhawn SS 3 0 0 0 .167 R.Branca P 4 1 2 1 .500 S.Jones P 2 0 0 0 .000 A-J.McCarthy PH 1 0 0 0 .500 M.McGowan P 0 0 0 0 ---- -- -- -- --- -- -- -- --- Totals 37 9 8 9 Totals 32 3 8 3 A-Pinch Hit For Jones In 8th Inning Dodgers......... 1 0 0 0 0 8 0 0 0 - 9 8 0 Giants.......... 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 - 3 8 2 Dodgers (1-1) IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA SCORESHEET R.Branca WIN(1-0) 9 8 3 3 1 8 1 3.00 A1 Totals 9 8 3 3 1 8 1 Giants (1-1) IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA SCORESHEET S.Jones LOSS(0-1) 8 8 9 1 4 3 1 1.13 A1 E2 M.McGowan 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0.00 E3 Totals 9 8 9 1 4 3 1 ATTENDANCE- 11,727 DATE- Wednesday, April 21st 1948 TIME- Day WEATHER- Bad UMPIRES- Dusty Boggess, Butch Henline, , Bill Stewart T- 2:21 LEFT ON BASE- Dodgers: 5 Giants: 3 DOUBLE PLAYS- Dodgers: 2 Giants: 0 ERRORS- W.Lockman, W.Marshall DOUBLES- J.Conway(1st), W.Cooper(1st) TRIPLES- J.Robinson(1st), W.Lockman(1st) HOME RUNS- A.Vaughan(1st), J.Mize(1st) RBIs- J.Robinson-3(3rd), A.Vaughan-2(2nd), P.Ward(1st), C.Furillo(1st), G.Hodges(1st), R.Branca, W.Lockman(1st), B.Thomson(3rd), J.Mize(1st) CAUGHT STEALING- W.Marshall WALKS- A.Vaughan, D.Whitman, B.Cox, G.Hodges, W.Marshall STRIKE OUTS- J.Robinson, R.Branca-2, J.Conway-2, B.Thomson, J.Mize, W.Cooper, R.Rhawn, S.Jones-2 GIDP- B.Thomson, W.Cooper WILD PITCHES- R.Branca, S.Jones 2-out RBI- G.Hodges, R.Branca, J.Robinson-3, A.Vaughan-2 RLISP 2-out- R.Rhawn, B.Cox, W.Cooper TEAM RISP- Dodgers: 4 for 9 Giants: 2 for 5Thursday, April 22Brooklyn 4, New York 2For the second straight day, an error led to the go-ahead runs that determined the game. This time, Bobby Thomson's error to start the ninth cost Thornton Lee a win after he got the next two batters following Bruce Edwards to fly out to center. With one out to go, pinch hitter Jackie Robinson hit a double to tie the game. Then, Eddie Miksis drove him in with a double, and the pattern continued for a third time with an Arky Vaughan double. The Giants drew two walks in the bottom half but Willie Ramsdell got out of the inning to finish off New York.BOXSCORE: 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers At 1948 New York Giants 4/22/1948 Dodgers AB R H RBI AVG Giants AB R H RBI AVG E.Miksis 2B 5 1 2 1 .400 J.Conway 2B 4 0 1 0 .250 A.Vaughan LF 5 1 2 1 .308 W.Lockman LF 4 0 1 0 .333 P.Ward 1B 4 0 1 0 .357 B.Thomson CF 5 0 0 0 .182 C.Furillo CF 4 0 3 1 .385 J.Mize 1B 3 2 1 1 .182 P.Reese SS 3 0 0 0 .167 W.Marshall RF 3 0 1 0 .300 B.Edwards C 4 1 1 0 .200 W.Cooper C 2 0 0 1 .200 B.Cox 3B 4 0 0 0 .000 J.Lohrke 3B 3 0 1 0 .125 D.Lund RF 4 0 0 0 .000 R.Rhawn SS 3 0 0 0 .111 H.Taylor P 2 0 0 0 .000 T.Lee P 2 0 0 0 .000 A-B.Ramazzotti PH 1 0 1 01.000 M.McGowan P 0 0 0 0 ---- J.Banta P 0 0 0 0 ---- C-J.McCarthy PH 1 0 0 0 .333 B-J.Robinson PH 1 1 1 1 .273 W.Ramsdell P 0 0 0 0 ---- -- -- -- --- -- -- -- --- Totals 37 4 11 4 Totals 30 2 5 2 A-Pinch Hit For Taylor In 7th Inning B-Pinch Hit For Banta In 9th Inning C-Pinch Hit For McGowan In 9th Inning Dodgers......... 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 - 4 11 1 Giants.......... 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 - 2 5 3 Dodgers (2-1) IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA SCORESHEET H.Taylor 6 4 1 1 5 3 0 1.50 A1 C8 J.Banta WIN(1-0) 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 4.50 C9 D7 W.Ramsdell SAVE(1st) 1 0 0 0 2 1 0 0.00 D8 Totals 9 5 2 2 8 5 1 Giants (1-2) IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA SCORESHEET T.Lee LOSS(0-1) 8 2/3 11 4 1 2 4 0 1.04 A1 E2 M.McGowan 0 1/3 0 0 0 0 0 0 0.00 E3 Totals 9 11 4 1 2 4 0 ATTENDANCE- 18,755 DATE- Thursday, April 22nd 1948 TIME- Day WEATHER- Good UMPIRES- Al Barlick, , George Barr, Lee Ballanfant T- 2:36 LEFT ON BASE- Dodgers: 8 Giants:10 DOUBLE PLAYS- Dodgers: 2 Giants: 1 ERRORS- E.Miksis, B.Thomson, W.Cooper, R.Rhawn DOUBLES- E.Miksis(1st), A.Vaughan(1st), C.Furillo(1st), J.Robinson(1st), J.Conway(2nd) TRIPLES- C.Furillo(1st) HOME RUNS- J.Mize(2nd) RBIs- E.Miksis(1st), A.Vaughan(3rd), C.Furillo(2nd), J.Robinson(4th), J.Mize(2nd), W.Cooper(3rd) STOLEN BASES- C.Furillo(1st) CAUGHT STEALING- P.Ward SACRIFICE FLIES- W.Cooper WALKS- P.Ward, P.Reese, J.Conway, W.Lockman, J.Mize, W.Marshall, W.Cooper, J.Lohrke, R.Rhawn, T.Lee STRIKE OUTS- P.Ward, B.Edwards, H.Taylor-2, J.Conway-2, B.Thomson, T.Lee-2 GIDP- B.Cox, B.Thomson 2-out RBI- C.Furillo, J.Robinson, E.Miksis, A.Vaughan RLISP 2-out- B.Edwards-2, R.Rhawn, B.Thomson-2, P.Reese, P.Ward TEAM RISP- Dodgers: 4 for 13 Giants: 0 for 7
