Joe DiMaggio's go-ahead, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth was his first blast out of the park in 1948. He also drove in the only other New York run with an RBI single in the first. Allie Reynolds pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits for his second win.

Things quickly went south, though, as he allowed that runner to score and later gave up three consecutive hits to start the sixth, culminating in a Phil Rizzuto home run. Ed Lopat earned his first win on his team with a complete game victory.

Down five, Cleveland loaded the bases for Lou Boudreau, who had just 40 career homers coming into the game. His 41st marked his first ever grand slam. The next batter, Joe Gordon, then hit it out of the park to tie the game. In the ninth, pinch hitter Hal Peck doubled and then scored when Thurman Tucker singled in the next at bat. Newly acquired Russ Christopher pitched 1-2-3 ninth to seal the comeback victory for the visitors.

Art Houtteman outdueled Bob Feller, who started out strong with no hits allowed until the fourth, and was bolstered by an efficient offensive output from Detroit. Feller was allowed to try and save his game in the seventh, but a two-out error allowed Neil Berry to come to bat with the bases loaded. His triple put the lead out of reach even after a Ken Keltner homer in the ninth.

Chicago swept Pittsburgh to end the opening series as just one of two undefeated teams in the National League. Bill Nicholson was 12-for-15 with four extra base hits and five RBIs as he turned back the clock, looking like the dominant slugger he was back during the war after a few down years in the time since.

Cincinnati held off a late comeback attempt from the home team, who managed to bounce back from a five-run deficit in the final inning to bring the winning run to the plate before Harry Gumbert recorded the final out. Hank Sauer's three-run homer in the seventh ended  up being the difference following the near collapse.

Leading by nine going into the final inning, Eddie Dyer had no problem leaving Ken Burkhart in to try and work out of the jam he created trying to finish off the game. Facing nine batters, Burkhart only managed to retire one, allowing the tying run to come to the plate before he was pulled for Ted Wilks. Wilks retired the next two batters to stave off one of the biggest comeback wins of all time. Stan Musial had four hits and drove in five runs as he is off to a strong start to the season.

Bill Nicholson had three hits, as many as both the rest of his team and also the whole Pirates squad. He also picked up an RBI on each hit, totaling half the runs scored in the game by both teams combined. Russ Meyer threw a three-hitter for Chicago, notably ending on innings of no-hit ball after allowing all three hits in the first frame. Six walks and an error still allowed Pittsburgh to put up a fight, but going hitless with runners in scoring position doomed their chances.

Wally Westlake's pinch-hit home run with two outs in the ninth led to a marathon as runs were hard to come by. Chicago got the leadoff runner on three times in extra innings, and also loaded the bases in a separate, fourth inning, but could not score until Cliff Aberson's three-run homer in the 15th. The Pirates finally scored too, but an inning too late as they could only score once in the bottom half of the inning. Bill Nicholson did not drive in any runs like on Tuesday, but ended up going for 4-for-6.

Chicago bounced back after blowing a five-run lead to score six runs in the tenth against Woody Main. Bill Nicholson was a perfect 5-for-5, scoring three times and driving in two more runs, to improve his average at the end of the opening series to .800. Wally Westlake hit a pinch-hit homer for the second straight day, this time in the tenth. It was still too late as the Pirates trailed by four following the Cubs' avalanches of runs in the top half.

Johnny Sain effortlessly shutout the Phillies in the season opener, holding them to six hits and no walks while striking out eight. Philadelphia failed to put together multiple hits in an inning until the ninth, by which point it was to late. Their defense also let them down with three errors leading to the same number of unearned runs scoring. Every Brave but Sibby Sisti had a hit, but even Sisti drove in a run and then later scored after reaching base on an error.

Another day with three errors sunk Philadelphia's chances, allowing the game to go to extra innings and then allowing the deciding run. Until the final frame, Boston's only lead of the day came on an RBI single by Bob Elliott in the first. The Phillies responded with two runs in the bottom half after three straight singles to start the game. Bill Voiselle then settled down and the game came down to pitching and defense. After exchanging runs in the middle innings, the Braves tied the game in the eighth thanks to an error by Bert Haas that extended the inning. Then, in the eleventh, Danny Litwhiler drove in a run with an RBI double to break the tie. An error by Eddie Miller two batters later turned the third out into another Boston run. That would prove to be the difference as the Phillies tallied one in the bottom half but could not get the second run, leaving the tying runner on third.

The Dodgers batted around in the sixth to cruise to the win with a complete game by Ralph Branca keeping the Giants in check. The inning started with a costly error by Willard Marshall, as Arky Vaughan would reach base and scored an unearned run thanks to a Preston Ward single. The remaining runs would then be unearned as the next two batters were retired. Brooklyn's two-out rally involved a pair of walks and singles, then a bases-clearing triple by Jackie Robinson, who was driven in with a home run by Vaughan.

For the second straight day, an error led to the go-ahead runs that determined the game. This time, Bobby Thomson's error to start the ninth cost Thornton Lee a win after he got the next two batters following Bruce Edwards to fly out to center. With one out to go, pinch hitter Jackie Robinson hit a double to tie the game. Then, Eddie Miksis drove him in with a double, and the pattern continued for a third time with an Arky Vaughan double. The Giants drew two walks in the bottom half but Willie Ramsdell got out of the inning to finish off New York.
